Rupa & the April Fishes


Thanks to a Saturday night drive home with CBC's "Apropos", I discovered Rupa & the April Fishes--a multi-talented band out of the San Francisco Bay Area. With songs in French, Spanish, English and Hindi, they remind me of Lhasa, Django Reinhardt, a less electronic-sounding Gotan Project, and Tom Waits' carnivalesque songs (except that Tom seems to convey the dark underbelly of the carnival whereas the April Fishes embody the magic of it).

Cumbancha records says the music "...echoes with influences of classic French chanson, Argentinean tango, Gypsy swing, American folk, Latin cumbias, and even hints of Indian ragas...the songs offer a magic carpet ride through time and place and embody Rupa's goal of breaking down borders both real and imagined."
